The Erbium laser emits light at a 2940 nm wavelength, which is strongly absorbed by the water in your skin. Both are ablative lasers, but Erbium YAG is absorbed by water in the skin roughly 10 times more efficiently than CO2. That means cleaner, more precise resurfacing with less heat damage, which usually translates to a quicker recovery and less redness afterward. CO2 laser resurfacing delivers more heat and tends to produce more skin tightening, so it may be the better choice for deeper wrinkles or loose skin. A topical numbing cream is applied before your treatment to keep you comfortable. Most patients describe a warm, prickling sensation during the procedure. If a deeper treatment is planned, our provider will review any additional comfort measures with you ahead of time.
Right after treatment, your skin will look and feel similar to a sunburn. Over the next few days you can expect redness, mild swelling, and flaking or peeling as new skin comes through. After a lighter treatment, most patients return to normal activities within about 3 to 7 days, while deeper treatments may need 1 to 2 weeks. Some pinkness can linger for a few weeks and can usually be covered with makeup once your skin has healed. Avoiding the sun and applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen daily are essential for several weeks afterward.
You will notice smoother, brighter skin as soon as the treated area heals, usually within about a week. Results continue to improve over the following 3 to 6 months as new collagen forms. Depending on your concerns and the depth of treatment, one session may be enough, or our provider may recommend a short series for concerns like acne scarring.
Erbium YAG resurfacing is a good fit for many adults with fine lines, sun damage, acne scars, or uneven texture. It may not be recommended if you have an active skin infection or cold sore, an inflammatory skin condition in the treatment area, a history of keloid scarring, a condition that slows healing, or if you have recently taken isotretinoin (Accutane). Treatment is typically postponed during pregnancy or breastfeeding. If you are prone to cold sores, an antiviral medication may be prescribed beforehand. Darker skin tones carry a higher risk of pigment changes, so our provider will carefully evaluate your skin during your consultation to decide if this treatment is right for you.
